We like to think we help our clients more. Taxes are a year round business. Most of our clients call us regularly throughout the year. We much prefer to hear, “Should I ...” before it happens rather than, “Guess what I did last year” when it’s to late to plan it right.
A good CPA can do much of what we do, just as well. But we think that our broader outlook makes us better, and often no more expensive than a good CPA.
Also, communications with a CPA are not privileged; conversations with a lawyer are protected by attorney-client confidentiality.
Are we more aggressive? Audit risk tolerance is always the client’s decision. There are legitimate deductions some clients decide not to claim in order to lower their audit risk. [Audits are not fatal, but like dental visits: even if you have no cavities it’s no fun.]
A tax preparer should always explain to a client what deductions are likely to trigger an audit. Tax decisions are always the client’s, after his tax professional has fully explained the options.
